Rounds 1 – 3
Take a moment at this point to measure from top to bottom. To achieve the correct size for a 3 to 6 month shoe it should measure around 10 cm.
The Completed Base : Rnds 1-5

Sole of Sneaker
Using grey yarn, working in continuous rounds. Slip st to join and ch1 at the end of each round.
Rnd 1 : Chain 13. Working into the 2nd ch from the hook, work 2Hdc in the first stitch, then sc in the next 9 stitches, hdc in the next, then 6hdc in the remaining stitch (turning to work down the opposite side of the initial ch stitches for the last 3), hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next 9 stitches, hdc in the last stitch. (29)
Rnd 2 : 2sc in the first stitch, sc in the next 10 stitches, hdc in the next stitch, 2hdc in each of the next 6 stitches, hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next 9 stitches, 2sc in the remaining stitch (37)
Rnd 3 : hdc in the first 16 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, hdc in the next 4 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, hdc in the next 13 stitches, 2hdc in both the remaining stitches (41)
Do not fasten off.
Line up the stitches around the sole of the sneaker with the base of the sneaker and slip stitch the two together – work the slip stitches through both loops of the sole and the front loop left untouched in round 4 around the base.
Fasten off.

TOE OF THE SHOE
Using white yarn, working in the round.
Rnd 1 : Work 7 hdc into a magic ring. Ch 1 and turn. (7)
Rnd 2 : 2hdc into each stitch around (14)
Do not fasten off. Instead, ch1 and then pick up a set of sc stitches along the top (flat) edge of the toe. Aim to pick up around 7 or 8 stitches along that top edge.
Align the toe of the shoe with the front-most 14 stitches of the base of the shoe. The front of the shoe is the slightly wider end, the heel of the shoe is the narrower end that had the slip stitch joins between rounds.
Slip stitch the two together – using BLO of the toe piece and both loops on the base.

SIDES OF THE SHOE
Originally there were 41 stitches around the white base of the shoe. With the toe piece added across 14 stitches at the front, that leaves 27 untouched stitches to create the sides.
Using black yarn working in rows. Ch1 and turn at the end of each round.
Starting in the first stitch to the left side of the toe.
Rnd 1 : hdc in the first stitch, ch1 and skip 1, hdc in the next 23 stitches, ch1 and skip 1, hdc in the last stitch (27)
Rnd 2-3 : Repeat Rnd 1
Rnd 4 : sc in each stitch around (incl. chain stitches) (27)
Fasten off.
Tidy away any remaining loose ends. It will be starting to look more like a sneaker now!

TONGUE
Using black yarn, working in rows. Ch1 and turn at the end of each round.
The following rows are worked across the back of the toe piece.
Rnd 1 : Hdc in each stitch along (8)
Rnd 2 : Repeat Rnd 1 (8)
Rnd 3 : Hdc2tog, sc in the next 4 stitches, Hdc2tog (6)
Fasten off.
To neaten the edges around the tongue, start at one corner and pick up a set of slip stitches around all three sides.

FINISHING TOUCHES
Stitchwork Detail
Using a long length of black yarn and a needle, stitch around the top of the base of the shoe to add some stitchwork detailing to the sneaker.

Add Laces
When the sides of the sneaks were made the second stitch at either side was a ‘ch1 and skip 1’ combination. This means at the sides of all three rows there is a gap to thread through some laces.
For this you can use a length of yarn, cord, ribbon or (if you want something a little chunkier) create a chain of approximately 91 stitches and slip stitch into each ch along (90).

Heel Tab
As a final flourish, you can add a heel tab.
To create the tab, using white yarn, chain 8 stitches. Working into the 2nd ch from the hook, slip stitch in each stitch along and fasten off.
Fold it over and attach at the heel.
