FREE CROCHET AMIGURUMI PATTERN

About this pattern:

What’s better than 1 Totoro? How about three! Here’s your pattern to create your own Totoro, Chu Totoro and Chibi Totoro inspired by the Studio Ghibli classic.

The materials required are listed below. The yarn used to make them as pictured was Drops Paris (cotton) yarn in grey, blue, white and red, but also scraps of light brown and black.

Materials:

  • Aran Yarn (grey, white, blue, red)
  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • 6mm safety eyes x 2. 4mm safety eyes x 4
  • Stitch markers and pins
  • Yarn needle
  • Stuffing
  • Cocktail stick (optional, umbrella handle)

Stitch Abbreviations:

Sc = Single crochet
Slip st = Slip stitch
Invdec = invisible decrease
Sc2tog = single crochet decrease
Hdc = half double crochet
** = a repeating stitch pattern

Pattern Notes:

Stitches are written in standard US terms working in continuous rounds unless otherwise specified.

Let’s Get Started!

TOTORO (Big)

EYES (Make 2)

Using white yarn, working in a row.

Rnd 1 : Ch3, Working into the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in both stitches (2)

Fasten off. Insert a 6mm safety eye into each eye, or embroider on the eye detail with black yarn.

Insert safety eye through each eye patch.

BODY

Using grey yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (24)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 3 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (30)
Rnd 6: *sc in next 4 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (36)
Rnd 7: sc in each stitch around (36)
Rnd 8: *sc in next 5 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (42)
Rnd 9-10: sc in each stitch around (42)
Rnd 11: *sc in next 5 stitches, invdec* (36)
Rnd 12: sc in each stitch around (36)
Rnd 13: *sc in next 4 stitches, invdec* Repeat 6 times (30)
Rnd 14-15: sc in each stitch around (30)
Rnd 16: *sc in next 3 stitches, invdec* Repeat 6 times (24)
Rnd 17-18: sc in each stitch around (24)
Rnd 19: *sc in next 2 stitches, invdec* Repeat 6 times (18)

Insert the safety eyes/eye patches so that the eyes are between Rnds 16 and 17, approx. 4 stitches apart. Stitch on the nose and whisker details and then stuff before continuing.

Rnd 20: *sc, invdec* Repeat 6 times (12)
Rnd 21: invdec around (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle thread the yarn tail through the 6 stitches of the last round and pull tight to close. Fasten off.

PATCH

Using white yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (24)

Slip st into the next stitch and fasten off. Using grey yarn, stitch the markings onto the patch. You can choose which side you prefer to have as the ‘right side’. in the photograph, the reverse was chosen as the front side as it has a smoother texture.

ARMS (Make 2)

Using grey yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 3 times (9)
Rnd 3-4: sc in each stitch around (9)
Rnd 5: *sc, invdec* Repeat 3 times (6)
Rnd 6: sc in each stitch around (6)

Fasten off.

Attach the patch to the front of the body, centred with the face. Attach an arm to each side, with the top of each arm in line with the top of the patch.

EARS (Make 2)

Using grey yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Stitch 3 sc into a magic ring (3)
Rnd 2: sc in each stitch around (3)
Rnd 3: 2sc in the first stitch, sc in the remaining 2 stitches (4)
Rnd 4: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 2 times (6)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 2 times (8)
Rnd 6: sc in each stitch around (8)
Rnd 7: invdec around (4)
Fasten off.

Attach the ears to the head, the same distance apart as the eyes.

TAIL

Using grey yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Stitch 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: sc in each stitch around (6)
Rnd 3: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 3 times (9)
Rnd 4: sc in each stitch around (9)
Rnd 5: *sc, invdec* Repeat 3 times (6)
Fasten off.

Attach to the lower back of the body.

CHU TOTORO

EYES (Make 2)

Using white yarn, working in the round.

Rnd 1 : Work 5sc into a magic ring (5)
Fasten off.

Insert the 4mm eyes, just as previously with the big Totoro.

BODY

Using blue yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4: sc in each stitch around (18)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (24)
Rnd 6: sc in each stitch around (24)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 3 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (30)
Rnd 8: sc in each stitch around (30)
Rnd 9: *sc in next 8 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (27)
Rnd 10: *sc in next 7 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (24)
Rnd 11: *sc in next 6 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (21)
Rnd 12: sc in each stitch around (21)
Rnd 13: *sc in next 5 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (18)

Insert the safety eyes/eye patches so that the eyes are between Rnds 11 and 12, approx. 4 stitches apart. Stitch on the nose detail and then stuff before continuing.

Rnd 14: *sc in next 4 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (15)
Rnd 15: *sc in next 3 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (12)

Fasten off. Using the yarn tail and a yarn needle, stitch through the 4 stitches in the last round and pull tight to close.

Rnd 1: Stitch 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2-3: sc in each stitch around (6)

Fasten off.

Attach to the lower back of the body.

CHIBI TOTORO

BODY

Using white yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3: *sc in next 3 sticthes, 2sc* Repeat 3 times (15)
Rnd 4-6: sc in each stitch around (15)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 3 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (12)
Rnd 8: sc in each stitch around (12)

Insert 4mm safety eyes between Rnds 7-8, approx. 2/3 stitches apart. Stuff the body and then continue.

Rnd 9: *sc in next 2 stitches, invdec* Repeat 3 times (9)
Rnd 10: *sc, invdec* Repeat 3 times (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Using a yarn needle thread the yarn tail through the 6 stitches of the last round and pull tight to close. Fasten off.

EARS (Make 2)

Using white yarn, working in a row.

Rnd 1 : Ch3, Working into the 2nd ch from the hook, slip st in the first stitch, sc in the last. (2)

Fasten off and tie the two tail ends together. Attach to the head.

TAIL

Using white yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Stitch 4sc into a magic ring (4)
Rnd 2: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 2 times (6)

Fasten off and attach to the lower back of the body.

ACCESSORIES

UMBERELLA

Using red yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3: *sc, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (18)
Rnd 4: *sc in next 2 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (24)
Rnd 5: *sc in next 3 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (30)
Rnd 6: *sc in next 4 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (36)
Rnd 7: *sc in next 5 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (42)
Rnd 8: *sc in next 6 stitches, 2sc* Repeat 6 times (48)
Rnd 9: sc in each stitch around (48)
Rnd 10: *sc in next 2 stitches, slipst in next 2 stitches, sc in next 2 stitches, hdc in next 2 stitches* Repeat 6 times (48)

Fasten off. Tidy away and the tail end yarns and then insert a cocktail stick into the centre and glue into place.

KNAPSACK

Using light brown yarn, working in continuous rounds.

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6)
Rnd 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12)
Rnd 3-5: sc in each stitch around (12)

Fasten off. Take a length of brown yarn and work it in and out of the 12 stitches in round 5. Holding both ends of the yarn, pull tight to create a drawstring. Leave the ends of the yarn so they can be wound around a Totoro arm as a strap.

And there you have it, your Totoro trio are complete!
